  • 10 years of collabration between those of charity and Shalamar Hospital. Till now we have operated 422 children left palate and left lip.Only in 2008,we have operated upon 120 children.Total 35 children have been treated in USA during these years.THis year 5 children left in Jan 2008 and came back May 2008 and 2 left in July 2008 and in future more are leaving by end of this year.
TB DAY SYMPOSIUM AND EXHIBITION 2008

  • 24 March is celebrated every year, world wide as International TB Day under the auspices of World Health Organization. Shalamar Hospital Lahore actively participated in this year’s TB Day celebrations held on 24 March 2008. A symposium and an exhibition were arranged to mark the occasion. Because of its importance and the only activity of its kind in Lahore, the Director General Health Services Government of Punjab Dr M Aslam Chaudhary inaugurated the symposium and the exhibition. The symposium was a full day program attended by more than 100 Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Scientists from various hospitals of Lahore. The subjects discussed during the symposium included different aspects of TB diagnosis and management. Renowned consultants from Shalamar Hospital and other civil and military hospitals in Lahore shared their experiences with the audience. The topics included epidemiology, pathology, laboratory diagnosis including molecular aspects, recommendations on management and implementation of DOTS program in Pakistan. Latest, unpublished data about MDR-TB, which was generated as a result of a research project at University of Health Sciences Lahore, was presented. All important multi-national as well as domestic companies dealing with TB therapeutic and diagnostic services participated in the exhibition and also generously contributed towards the Continuous Medical Education grant. The participation in the symposium was offered without any registration fee because of this grant.
SYMPOSIUM ON THALASSAEMIA DAY

  • 1: Shalamar Hospital celebrated thalassaemia day on 7th May 2008 in auditorum from 0900 hours to 1100 hours, organized by Pathology department. 2: Purpose of this symposium was to educate the doctors, paramedics and the affected families about this hereditary blood disease which results from genetically determined reduction in haemoglobin synthesis. 3: The event was well advertised and very well attended and graced by the presence of Prof. Abdul Hayee (Haematologist) as chief guest, intellecutal and journalist Munoo Bhai and guest speaker Prof. Yasmin Rashid(Secretory, Thalassaemia Society of Pakistan). 4: Disease, it’s underlying pathology, psychological & financial impacts and detection of thalassaemia carriers were discussed by consultant haematologist, Dr. Ghulam Rasul Sial. 5: Dr. Nadeem Hameed, consultant Paedeatrician Shalamar Hospital described the management of thalassaemia major. 6: Prenatal diagnosis and prevention of the disease was discussed by Prof. Yasmin Rashid (gynaecologist) Lady Willington Hospital Lahore. 7: Points stressed upon were: i: Optimum packed cell transfusion to keep Hb near 11 g/dl and regular iron chelation to avoid iron overload and it’s complication. ii: Determination of thalassaemia carrier status of Siblings and other relatives of the thalassemic to prevent the transmission of disease to next generation by avoiding inter carrier marriages. iii: Prenatal diagnosis of the disease (10 – 14 weeks gestation) on each pregnancy in case of carrier couple and termination of pregnancy (upto 16 weeks gestation) if homozygous status of the foetus is detected. At the end of clinical session shields and certificates were awarded to the doctors and gifts to the patients. Clinical session ended with vote of thanks by Chief Executive Shalamar Hospital, Dr. Rashid Ahmad.
