Shalamar Hospital Pathology Services were upgraded in year 2002. The whole department was extended and given a brand new image with increased services and upgraded equipment. The Laboratory can now handle over 1 million tests and far more number of patients every year. The new Laboratory now comprises the following seven sections:

1. Haematology
2. Transfusion Medicine
3. Chemical Pathology
4. Immunology
5. Histo/Cytopathology
6. Microbiology
7. Molecular biology

All these sections are fully functional and equipped with modern and state-of-the-art equipment. It is working round-the-clock under one roof. The senior clinical staff (consultant/specialist) is experienced and well trained and the paramedical staff is well qualified.


This section is well equipped with autoanalyser to perform routine as well as specialized investigations ranging from routine blood counts, optimal Malaria test, clot screening, coagulation factor assays, thrombophilia screening, bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy facilities cytochemical stains and Hb and protein electrophoresis

Transfusion Medicine

This section comprises of Plasma Cell Separator. We have facilities to store up to 650 units of various blood products. All kinds of blood products are prepared including Platelets, Fresh frozen plasma (FFP), Cryoprecipitates, Granulocytes and packed BsAg, HIV, Optimal Malaria Test and VDRL to provide safe blood to the patients.

Chemical Pathology Section

The chemical pathology section of Shalamar Hospital Laboratory is providing services to in-patients, out-patients and emergency departments of Shalamar Hospital. This section is rendering comprehensive and quality diagnostic services which are efficient and cost-effective.
Chemical Pathology section is equipped with latest equipment and the tests are carried out by properly trained professionals on highly automated equipment to ensure the accurate results in shortest possible time. The section performs more than 1,200 tests every day and provides routine and 24-hours emergency services. Qualified and experienced medical technologists and technicians work in chemical pathology and have vast experience of handling automated analysers.

Quality Assurance Programme

To provide accurate, precise and highest standard of test, the internal quality control program is monitored on a daily basis and section. The Section has a collaboration with Randox External Quality Assurance Program (REQAS) London and National External Quality Assurance Program (NEQAP) monitored by Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Rawalpindi (AFIP).

Immunology Section

The immunology section of Shalamar Hospital Laboratory is providing specialized and quality diagnostic services.The Section is performing specialized tests by agglutination, ELISA and Chemiluminescence Techniques on fully automated equipment. In addition to Hepatitis and virus profile, the department is performing a wide range of tests like Hormone profiles, Tumour markers etc.

Histopathology & Cytology Section

The Histopathology section is functioning for the last 15 years. Presently the section is handling over 3,000 surgical specimen and over 1,000 Cytology specimens annually under the supervision of a UK trained histopathologist.
This section is well equipped with all modern equipment. In addition to Haematoxylin & Eosin staining other Histo-chemical stains like Giemsa, Z-N, Congo red, Reticulin and Oil red are also available.
Immuno-histo-chemistry with panel of antibodies for diagnosis and classification of tumours and receptor assay analysis for breast cancer is also performed. Cytology section is also provided with the room for Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology is now regularly performed in this Section.

Microbiology Section

The section performs routine urine and stool examination, all biological fluid analysis, aerobic & anaerobic culture of CSF, ascitic and pleural fluid, Pus, AFB Culture, fungal culture and sensitivity. In collaboration with Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department, the Section has recently started sperm preparation for IUI (intra-uterine insemination).
Properly trained and qualified medical technologists work in the microbiology section and are supervised by qualified pathologists.

Molecular Biology Section

The Molecular Biology section is a new addition for the people of Northern Lahore. This section is well equipped and supervised by a qualified Specialist Molecular Biologist. PCR technique is available for the detection of HCV, HBV, MTB, and BCR-ABL gene inCMLpatients.q
