About Hashmat Effendi Burn and Plastic Surgery Department
Established in 1997, the Hashmat Effendi Burn & Plastic Surgery department at Shalamar Hospital delivers individualised diagnosis and treatment services to people suffering from acute burns, birth defects and other physical abnormalities.
The department began as a 10 bed Children Reconstructive Surgery and Research Centre (CRSRC) in collaboration with House of Charity, an American non-profit organisation dedicated to helping impoverished children receive quality medical care. In response to the growing need in clinical care, we reformed our department to become what is now known as Hashmat Effendi Burn & Plastic Surgery department in 2017 and added 4 new beds dedicated to our patients in intensive care.
The department acts as a regional referral centre for acute paediatric burns. It is also actively engaged in the registration process for postgraduate training whilst adding several cosmetic procedures to its list of services. Typically, surgeries are performed in the General Operation Theatres while ICU admissions are reserved for critically ill patients. We also offer rehabilitation services inside the department ward and OPD services in our fully-equipped treatment room.
Our goal is to become a centre of excellence in offering comprehensive and holistic treatment processes and enabling our patients to reach optimum functioning levels as quickly as possible in an environment marked by compassion and care.

I was born without a leg and an arm. As hard as it was, I had accepted that as a way of my life; the bullying, the difficulty in movement, my parents’ worries. I had accepted that I would never be able to move and live the way most others did. My difficulties were further aggravated when I grew older and felt like I was becoming a burden on my already distressed parents. I started to experience very frequent periods of depression and helplessness. Then one day Allah sent help in the form of a neighbor, who told my parents that I could get a chance at living a normal life by getting an arm and leg prosthesis. I was still hopeless as I knew that we would never be able to be afford it. My life was changed by an angel in the form of Hashmat Effendi and the team at Shalmar Hospital who financed my entire treatment and arm/leg prosthesis. I can now walk and live a normal life like the others. I can now be happy!
